It is well known that depression often goes hand-in-hand with artistic minds. From real-world observations I’d say this is probably true of animators. How is it then that most of the animation blogs and Twitter feeds out there are overwhelmingly positive?
I know of only a couple of animators who write about their dark days. I can probably only count on one hand the number of them who give at the very least a balanced account of their lives and careers. The vast majority either write purely about how wonderful things are, or they will put a positive spin on tough situations.
Of course I know, as most of us do, the reason for this. We’re in a very close-knit industry where almost everyone knows almost everyone else, and every one of us is conscious of who might be reading our words in the future. However it seems sad to me that the tough aspects of life are glossed over, especially when it is done by those who would call themselves artists.
Not every cloud has a silver lining. But that’s okay.
