Well this is a momentous occasion. Tonight I....I.....well I went and picked up a pencil!!
It's ok, take a moment to sit down and mop your brow. Get some smelling salts or something.
Right so it's been about three millennia since I last drew something more than just a doodle, and even longer since I tried drawing an actual human being. So here's this evening's attempts at some life drawing.
I have a few videos by Glen Vilppu covering things like gesture drawing and spherical forms, which I was trying to keep in mind when drawing these three pictures. I even changed technique in that I stood up to draw, which I found to be a rather pleasant experience. It's surprisingly freeing to not have your hand resting on the paper as you draw. The only thing that touched the paper was the pencil. Well it wasn't a pencil, but more of a china marker of sorts.
Anyway, I was quite pleased with these as I feel they are a large improvement on my last attempt at life drawing. Good lord, I just looked at the date of that post: November 22nd 2006! That's over a year and a half ago! I can't believe how lazy I've been.
Of course I have drawn gestures and cartoons and stuff in that time, but it's so important that I get back to proper studies of people. I'm currently looking for a regular life drawing class or session in the area, but they are so hard to find. You would have thought that a big city like Manchester would have plently, but no. To find one that's a proper class with a teacher would be a bonus.
